Gear up and train your dog for hunting season
A great pheasant hunt requires two things: the right gear and a ready dog. As much as we love tradition, today’s hunters have access to some fantastic upgrades that make long days in the field more comfortable and effective.
Start with your boots. You’ll walk miles each day, and a good pair is worth every penny. Next up, your vest and outerwear. We’ve put Chief Upland’s Over and Under Vest system and brush pants through thousands of bird flushes, and they hold up season after season. Don’t overlook your shells. But even the best gear won’t help if your four-legged partner isn’t ready. The off-season is the perfect time to sharpen skills and strengthen your bond. Just 10–30 minutes of training a few times a week keeps your dog sharp. Mix in water work during the summer heat, and even basic commands at home while you watch TV. Consistency now will pay off big when your dog steals the show in the field.
